How Fast Does Black Hair Grow?

How fast does black hair grow?
It’s the most commonly asked question our customer service team fields here at Rennora Beauty. Our hair growth serum for black women is capable of filling in bald spots and restoring healthy hair growth at the edges. A lot of women have seen progress in just a few weeks.
However, we think setting expectations is the most important thing you can do along your hair growth journey. We never promise overnight results. Hair growth can take as long as 3+ months before noticeable changes occur. And unfortunately, African American hair does grow slower according to a study published by the International Journal of Dermatology.
That doesn’t mean you’re doomed to stagnant hair growth forever. We’ll show you what’s possible and share some of our top tips so you can hit the fast-forward button on your progress.
Key Takeaways
- African American hair can grow at a rate of 4-6 inches per year.
- Asian and caucasian hair tends to grow faster than black hair.
- Your hair growth rate is partially genetic, but you can support faster hair growth through lifestyle and haircare habits.
- The best thing you can do is add Rennora Beauty’s serum, vitamins, other prodcuts to your arsenal. Specifically formulated for types 3 and 4 hair.
How Fast Does Black Hair Grow? Average Growth Rates
So, how fast does African American hair grow on average? The easy answer is not as fast as you want it to. But let’s look at some actual research into the African American hair growth rate.
One study measured 256 micrometers per day. That comes out to around 0.8 cm per month, or about 3.5-4 inches per year.1 However, that’s an average. Some women grew closer to 2 inches annually while others pushed past 5 inches.1
The study also showed that the typical head of African hair has more follicles in resting than other races - 18% compared to 14% in caucasians.1 More follicles in resting = slower growth rate.
What dictates exactly where you fall on that range, though? Quite a few things - scalp health, hormonal balance, nutrition, and how many of your follicles are in the anagen (active growth) phase at any given time.
How Fast Does African American Hair Grow Compared to Other Races?
Now for the uncomfortable reality women with types 3 and 4 have to come to terms with…how fast does black hair grow compared to other races?
We pulled up some research and found that Asian hair grows the fastest at a rate of 1.3-1.4cm per month.2 That’s because Asians have circular follicles that spit out straight, thick hair that grows perpendicular. The hair works its way vertically from the follicle so you can see the growth sooner.
Meanwhile, caucasian hair sits in the middle - 1.2cm per month is a normal growth rate. White people have different types of follicles, though. Sometimes that results in wavy hair. In other cases, it comes out really curly. There are plenty of white people with straight hair, too. Across the board, though, Caucasians tend to have the densest hair.
As you can see, this puts us black people in last place for hair growth rate. Only about 0.8cm of growth per month. Yet another example of us having unfair disadvantages, but, like all things, we can overcome our challenges.
It’s also worth noting that growth rate and length retention are separate problems.3 Your follicles may be growing hair at an above-average pace - but what does it matter if your hair breaks or sheds because of heat, tension, or chemical treatments? This is the case for so many of us. We lose length before we ever get to see it.
Can You Speed Up Your Natural Hair’s Growth Rate?
There’s only so much you can do to encourage faster hair growth - but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth overhauling your hair care ritual. Here are some quick tips.
Hair Growth Serums
Our hair growth serum is the #1 choice for women of color because it was made by women of color. You get 39 botanical ingredients including Bhringraj, Saw Palmetto, and Castor Oil to stimulate blood flow, calm inflammation, and wake up dormant follicles. Use it every night, consistently, and you’ll be amazed at what a difference you see in your hair 6 months from now.
Internal Support
Our Nutrafol alternative is one of the best ways to help grow healthier hair, faster. It’s way more affordable and packed with the stuff types 3 and 4 hair actually need:
- Turmeric
- Japanese knotweed
- Ashwagandha
- Camu camu
And many, many more. 19 ingredients in total, all specifically chosen because we’ve seen them support healthy hair growth in real women of color. You could see visibly thicker, faster hair in 90-120 days!
Other Healthy Habits
- Protective styles minimize the damage that accelerates breakage and shedding.
- Satin bonnets/pillowcases prevent hair loss while you sleep.
- Trimming split ends every 8-12 weeks stops breakage from getting worse.
- Keep heat styling to a minimum (or at least use a good heat protectant for black hair).
- Don’t overlook the role of diet - eat plenty of proteins, omega fatty acids, antioxidants, and other essential vitamins/minerals.
Patience is a Virtue!
We know you came here wondering, how fast does black hair grow? You just want to see those bald spots fill in and your hairline return. But hair growth doesn’t happen overnight. Any brand promising faster hair growth within a few days or weeks is overpromising - and will almost certainly underdeliver.
We’re always clear about the hair growth timeline when you start using Rennora Beauty:
- Weeks 1-3: Your scalp calms and the foundation is being built for better hair growth. Nothing will happen yet, so don’t expect it to. Stay on path.
- Week 4: Some women start seeing peach fuzz at the edges or bald spots.
- Month 3: Fuzz becomes real hair you can see and feel.
- Months 4 and beyond: You start to feel confident in your hair as sparse edges and bald spots become problems of the past.
If we could leave you with one piece of advice, it would be this - the sooner you take steps towards improving your hair growth rate, the faster you’ll see results. Don’t waste another day.
